Arthur's parents Joseph and Annie were from Driffield in East Yorkshire. They moved quite frequently and Arthur was born in Barnsley. His father was a Stone Mason and Arthur worked for Messrs J&MS Sharp Ltd as a Machinist's Labourer. He attended Heckmondwike Secondary School. He had a brother who also served in the army for a short time before he was discharged for health reasons. Arthur enlisted in September 1914 and embarked for France two years later in September 1916. He was reported missing in action during the 3rd Battle of Ypres also known as Passchendaele, his body was never recovered. An "In Memoriam" notice was published in the Cleckheaton Advertiser & Spenborough Times on 19th September 1919 which read "Duffin - In affectionate remembrance of Private Arthur W. Duffin, 9th H.L.I. (Glasgow Highlanders) who was killed near Gheluvelt, September 25th, 1917, on his 22nd birthday" {PL/RC-038} |
