Norman was born in April/May/June of 1897 in Rastrick. He was the eldest child of Albert Walshaw and Annie nee Lord. By 1911 they had two more children and were living in Birkhead Street in Heckmondwike, where Albert was a Wool and Yarn Dyer.
Norman enlisted in the Yorkshire Hussars in the Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Regiment. He was killed in action on 1st July 1916 in The Battle of the Somme and is buried in the Gordon Dump Cemetery at Ovillers-St Boiselle, V11 D 8.
He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. At home his name is on the Heckmondwike Grammar School War Memorial, the St. James’s Church and St. Saviour’s Church War Memorials.{MA-140}
