William was the son of Frederick and Mary Bellerby, his father was a Wine Merchant from Dewsbury and his mother was from Leeds. He was born in Mirfield and prior to settling in Heckmondwike he had lived for many years in Batley Carr. Before the war William had worked as an Assistant at George Jessop & Sons, Clothiers, and he was also in the 2nd Company WRVR; he excelled in physical education and was made a Lieutenant. In 1912 he married Emily Barker who was from Leeds and they had one child born in 1916.

He joined up on 4th August 1916; he was initially in the West Riding Regiment but was later transferred to the Durham Light Infantry. Whilst in France he developed trench foot and was in hospital in Greenock for a time. He returned to France six weeks before he died of gunshot wounds received during the Third Battle of Ypres.{PL-014}
